There appears to be a race behind the scenes as a number of actors are putting their pitch forward to play the next James Bond. Black actors who have expressed interest in the role include Idris Elba, Denzel Washington and Will Smith. Fans of the film franchise have also expressed their opinions on who they feel should play the next Bond and these include Chiwetel Ejiofor, known for his role in 12 years a slave.
Idris Elba has stated that he would like to play the iconic role of James Bond, which has been played only by White, British males in the past. In a recent Reddit ‘Ask me anything’ session one user asked Elba if he would take on the 007 role and Elba responded “Yes, if it was offered to me, absolutely.” Denzel also expressed interest in a Reddit session, when asked if he would be interested he responded “Yes I would!” Will Smith has also expressed his interest last December about playing Bond.
Supporters of the movement of casting a black actor for the lead have shown their support via twitter and Facebook feeds. The film giant was previously scrutinised when Daniel Craig was cast as the iconic role due his blonde hair with fans disagreeing with the casting choice, but this shift in image turned out to be a huge success.
The shift in image could open the door to actors from different backgrounds playing such iconic roles as these. Actor Clint Eastwood has previously expressed his concern with recent changes and commented that he feels the role should always remain British. Fans appear to be in favour of a shift in image and a shift as big as this could help black actors in the UK break down the wall and secure more leading roles on their home turf, rather than making the move to the US for their big breaks.
